The Design Brief

Some Call it Science, the latest thematic exhibition at Science Centre Singapore, is designed to ignite curiosity and broaden one’s understanding of science. As the design and build partner for this project, SPACElogic embraced the challenge of transforming the space into a dynamic, interactive environment. The goal was to show visitors that science is not confined to traditional disciplines but is an integral part of everyday life—and that everyone has the ability to engage with and experience science firsthand.

Design Approach

Our approach to the exhibition focused on creating an environment that fosters learning through exploration and play. The design balances scientific rigour with creativity, integrating colourful, engaging visuals with hands-on interactive stations. Incorporating modular, flexible spaces that encourage movement and discovery, this new exhibition allows visitors to freely to explore at their own pace.

"A flexible space with mobile interactive exhibits, making science accessible, engaging, and dynamic for all."

Science Beyond the Lab

Replacing the former Scientist for a Day exhibition, Some Call it Science redefines the meaning of Science by highlighting its presence beyond labs and textbooks. Science is everywhere—whether you are stirring ingredients in a kitchen or observing the natural world.

Featuring 11 exhibits and a classroom, such as Sound Island, Magnetic Island, and Light Island and SCIKO, the space invites guests to engage with different scientific concepts. Each of these islands make learning hands-on and emphasises how science can be synonymous with fun.

Inspiring a New Way of Thinking

At the heart of Some Call it Science is the concept that anyone can think like a scientist. Through exhibits like "We’ve Been Sciencing," visitors can learn how scientific concepts have been at play long before the term "Science" was ever coined. This exhibit shows how human curiosity and problem-solving have driven scientific advancements since ancient times.

By incorporating tactile and visual elements that engage the senses, our creative technologists ensured that the exhibits speak to visitors of all ages. Whether walking through Sound Island and exploring acoustics or engaging with magnetic forces on Magnetic Island, each exhibit brings science to life in a tangible, relatable way.

Interactive Spaces and Flexibility

Guided by the objective to break away from the traditional, rigid gallery formats, our design-build approach focused on creating flexible spaces. This was achieved by increasing the exhibit floor space and integrating movable fittings and mobile exhibits, which allow the space to be adapted for different purposes. The versatility in layout supports various event formats, from classroom learning, workshops to demonstrations, maximising the use of the exhibition hall.

Our carpentry team also built custom storage solutions for partition panels, enabling quick reconfigurations of the space as needed. These thoughtful design elements not only support the functional requirements of the Science Centre but also create an environment where visitors are free to explore, learn, and be inspired by science.

By seamlessly blending design, craftsmanship, and scientific exploration, Some Call it Science stands as a testament to how design can be used to make science both accessible and exciting.

We are honoured to have been part of this exciting project, blending our design and build expertise with Science Centre Singapore’s vision to create a gallery that is educational, and fun for all.
