Creating an Appealing F&B Interior Design: Strategies for Designing an Engaging F&B Interior

August 2, 2024

In this evolving narrative of gastronomic delight where aesthetics meets appetites, the interior architecture of your F&B establishment plays a pivotal role in shaping the overall dining experience.

As important as the food quality is, the interior of the space cannot afford to pale in comparison—dining is an experience done with taste and sight. As a design and build company specialising in creating immersive spaces, we are excited to share some valuable tips tailored for the Food and Beverage industry (F&B interior design).

The Importance of Good F&B Interior Design

Long gone are the days when restaurants are simply places to dine in, nowadays diners seek to partake in a sensory journey that transcends the ordinary and enjoy an unparalleled feast for the senses.

A Multi-Sensory and Memorable Dining Experience

The interior design of a restaurant plays a pivotal role in shaping the overall dining experience for customers. Having a thoughtful interior design not only allows your establishment to stand out from the crowd, it also encourages organic conversations to happen.

Beyond just visual appeal, good interior design also affects other senses that shape the overall dining experience.

Key Considerations for an Engaging F&B Interior Design

Crafting an Inviting Ambience and Atmosphere—Lights, Colours, Acoustics

Creating the right ambience and atmosphere is crucial for an engaging dining experience. Elements such as lighting, colour schemes, and music set the intended mood of the establishment and have tangible psychological effects on patrons.

  • Warm lighting and cosy tones can evoke a sense of comfort, while vibrant hues and bold patterns can energise the space.
  • Thoughtful lighting design, combining ambient and accent lighting, can enhance the presentation of food and beverages while setting the desired atmosphere.

For Ginza Shinto, a Japanese Omakase restaurant, we adopted warm lighting and chose accent cove light for the space to highlight the centre display piece and ambient light for the diners to witness the craft of the chefs.

The choice of music and its volume can also significantly impact one's dining experience

  • Excessive volume can impede conversations among diners, while overly soft music may cause individuals to feel self-conscious about their conversations being overheard.
  • Incorporating sound-absorbing materials into your F&B interior design is crucial. These materials, such as acoustic ceiling panels, wall coverings, curtains, carpets, and upholstery with sound-absorbing properties, help mitigate echoes and reverberations—enhancing overall comfort and creating a more enjoyable dining atmosphere.

In this example for Maduro, a series of tiered ‘welcome’ arches offer textural contrast to the surrounding finishes while also providing sound-absorbing acoustics.

Space Utilisation and Layout Design

Well-organised layouts help to maximise spatial efficiency, and create distinct zones tailored for diverse dining experiences. An effective space planning allows for multiple functions like dining, lounging and bar service without overuse of physical partitions which can be costly and takes up precious floorspace.

Functional Service Areas

An efficient layout also streamlines operations for staff and ensures a seamless dining experience. Well-designed functional areas minimise collisions, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance customer satisfaction by enabling prompt service.

Optimising Circulation - Both Customer and Staff Flow

A well-planned layout is crucial for an engaging and efficient F&B interior design. Prioritise optimising the customer flow from the entrance to seating areas, activity spaces, and the exit—providing clear pathways and intuitive signages that help to guide customers and avoid congestion points.

Furniture and Seating Options

Comfortable and varied seating options are essential for catering to diverse customer preferences and needs. Furniture selection should align with the overall design theme while offering a variety of seating options.

From a bar counter to communal tables, diners can get to choose what suits them best. Movable furniture also allows for spaces to be reconfigured as needed to accommodate different group sizes or events.

Brand Alignment and Visual Identity

An engaging interior design should seamlessly integrate the establishment's branding and visual identity for consistency and differentiation. Unique design elements that reflect the brand's personality and values can help establish an emotional connection with customers, creating a memorable dining experience and allowing it to stand out from the crowd.

Inspired by the Traditional Japanese House, Ginza Shinto is set to be minimalist, sleek yet inviting. Patrons are greeted by a “Shinto”-inspired Torii entrance arch, with a modern-twist. Illuminating the entrance walkway are warm light-emitting diode (LED) strips that set the mood of the space, creating the perfect ambience to enjoy one’s intimate Omakase meal.

Incorporating Finishing Touches to Elevate Your F&B Interior Design

Accessorising with Thoughtful Details

Just as the perfect accessories can transform an outfit, carefully curated finishing touches are the key to taking your F&B interior design from good to exceptional. Accessories and décor elements add depth, texture and layers that tie a space together. Consider incorporating small yet impactful pieces like monogrammed linen towels, decorative trays, or bud vases to create an inviting ambience.

The Power of Artistic Expression

Art is a transformative force that can redefine the character of a space. A thoughtfully curated art and décor serve as the soul of restaurant design, contributing to its unique aesthetic identity.

From biophilic walls that breathe life into a space, to a glass-encased alcohol collection that forms a centrepiece, art offers endless possibilities to infuse personality and sophistication into your F&B interior.

The Intangible Aspects of F&B Interior Design

A truly thoughtful F&B interior also considers intangible aspects i.e. back-of-house matters that are often over-looked.

Integrate Storage Solutions

Concealed storage is key to reducing clutter for an organised, open feel. Explore custom cabinetry, built-ins and innovative design interventions like banquettes with hidden compartments.

Prioritising Safety and Accessibility

Incorporate safety measures and adhere to accessibility guidelines in your layout design. Ensure clear pathways, proper lighting, and non-slip flooring to prevent accidents. Install essential safety features like fire exits and emergency lighting.

Conclusion

Creating an appealing F&B interior design requires careful consideration of your target audience, the overall atmosphere and ambience you wish to create, and laying out the space in a way that is efficient yet inviting.

Following key strategies around lighting, colour schemes, textures, acoustics, and layout can help you craft an interior that engages all the senses. Ultimately, a F&B interior should align with your brand identity while enticing customers to stay, socialise, and savour the experience offered.
