Have you wondered how the world will look like two centuries later?

2219: Futures Imagined, an exhibition co-produced by SPACElogic and ArtScience Museum was our interpretation of how life might be 200 years later.

As a co-producer of the exhibition, we oversaw the conceptualisation, coordination, and execution of the exhibition, ensuring a seamless integration of artistic vision and visitor experience together with ArtScience Museum.

Showcased during 2019’s Singapore Bicentennial, it moves away from the clichés of science fiction and aims to push visitors to reflect upon the potential repercussions, responses and adaptations needed to thrive in a world vastly different from what we are used to today.

Rather than transporting visitors straight into a distant world 200 years in the future, it begins in the year of 2019 and moves visitors through five acts as they step through a portal-like entryway, each set in a specific time period, marking key time points of the timeline.

With Act I: Arrival opening with Purple, a six-channel HD video installation depicting devastating impact of climate change, it sets the scene of how humans are starting to feel the consequences of environmental degradation.

As visitors journey through the exhibition, Act II: Home follows with the adjustments made in living spaces to attain self-sustenance as the environment continues to deteriorate—also highlighting the resilience and adaptive nature of Singaporeans. From food-growing computers to consuming food created from repurposed materials, Migitation of Shock by Superflux illustrates these possibilities with widespread resource scarcity, while retaining local elements making it unmistakably Singapore.

Fast-forwarding to 2060, Act III: Underworld explores mass-migration and impact of life underground—a subterranean environment to escape from the inhabitable conditions on Earth’s surface.

Juxtaposing the loss of nature and its relationship with people, depicted by The Forest Speaks Back (II) by Donna Ong, was Blooming by Lisa Park—an audio-visual (AV) interactive that conversely explores the themes of human connection.

Act IV: Adaptation, set in Year 2119 illustrates a time where the sea levels have risen to a point where the sea has become the primary geological feature on the planet. With the oceanic world impacted by climate change, jellyfish stands to be the only marine life left unaffected and thriving in the ecosystem—this interactive artwork installed by SPACElogic done in careful coordination with marine biologists also attempts to forebode that humans might no longer be the dominant species.

Closing with Act V: Memory, in anticipation of Singapore's Quadricentennial in 2219, the nation reconnects with its collective memory, rediscovering the resilience embedded within its cultural heritage. Despite enduring ecological challenges, ancestral customs and crafts are experiencing a revival. This resurgence highlights the enduring significance of cultural traditions, which transcend the fleeting nature of technology and infrastructure. Passed down from generation to generation, these traditions encompass the stories we share, the art we create, the prayers we offer, and the rituals we uphold. They represent the intimate legacies of our past, serving as guiding beacons as we navigate into the future.

Through a plethora of art mediums—immersive installations, spaces, films, painting and sculptures—visitors are welcomed to introspect upon what they are presented as they navigate this monumental exhibition, while allowing their own voice and perception to shape their experience.

"It has been a pleasure working with such a dedicated team—SPACElogic’s ideas, engagement and enthusiasm were integral in building an exhibition design that best marked the Singapore Bicentennial, allowing visitors to reflect on the potential challenges and possibilities of our lives 200 years in the future.

We are thrilled that the exhibition received very positive feedback from both the public and our colleagues in the museum sector; and visitor numbers surpassed our expectations. This could not have been achieved without SPACElogic’s support and contribution right from planning through to the realisation of the project." - Honor Harger, Vice President, ArtScience Museum, Vice President, Attractions, Marina Bay Sands."
